Very beautiful medaka. Sumi Kougyoku Medaka are known for their striking, high-contrast black, white, and marbled or blotchy coloration, and taigaikou (external light).
The Sumi Kougyoku is a specialized variant of the renowned Kōgyoku (紅玉) Medaka lineage. Here is a breakdown of how the strain was developed:
1. The Original Kōgyoku Lineage
The foundation for this fish is the Kōgyoku Medaka (meaning "Ruby" or "Red Jewel"), which was originally developed and released in September 2018 by the highly respected Japanese breeder Manabu Tange (of Medaka no Beans in Ehime Prefecture, Japan). The original Kōgyoku was celebrated for successfully combining a vivid tri-color pattern (orange/red, white, and black) with a striking metallic dorsal shine known as taigaikō (external light).
2. Selectively Breeding for "Sumi" (Ink)
In Japanese, Sumi (墨) translates to "ink" or "black". As the Kōgyoku strain gained popularity, breeders began isolating and selectively breeding generations to heavily emphasize the deep, ink-like black mottling and marbled contrast. By prioritizing genetics that display intense black patches, the "Sumi Kougyoku" was established.
